One of the things that makes some people reluctant to take advantage of hypnotic help for a problem is simple fear of the unknown.
If you haven’t experienced hypnosis before, and on top of that maybe you have heard or read negative things about it, you’re naturally going to have some concerns. Your apprehensions, after all, are completely normal. You’re going into some stranger’s office. That stranger is going to peer into your mind, and who knows what might happen next?
One common concern is this: What if I go so deep into a hypnotic trance that I can’t come back?
Relax. This isn’t going to happen*. There are absolutely no documented instances of someone going into a trance and not being able to wake up later, no matter how deep and intense the hypnotic state*.
There are several reasons why it’s impossible to get stuck in a hypnotic trance.
First, most useful trance states are not particularly deep. You are not going to go off the deep end and wind up in some mysterious shadowland*. Most of the time you will be completely aware of everything going on around you*. You will be aware of your body, and how relaxed it feels*. You will hear everything the hypnotist is saying, and see every move that person makes*. You will be aware of the room where you are sitting, and able to notice how it is furnished*. If your eyes are closed, you will be aware of that, and of the fact that you could open them if you want to*.
But let’s say that you are in a really deep trance, the kind that is referred to as somnambulistic. It doesn’t matter. Even in a trance that deep, a part of you is always aware of what is going on around you, paying attention to what is happening, and ready to pull you back into conscious awareness if need be*.
Being in a deep trance is something very different than the way you usually are, and so your mind and body’s need for homeostasis always brings you back to where you started*.
You may still have concerns about hypnosis and hypnotherapy.
Will it work? Will I be glad that I had the experience? Will it last?
These are common concerns that only trying hypnosis will answer.
But you absolutely don’t need to worry about diving into a trance and never coming out*. You will come out of the hypnotic trance without fail, and be more relaxed and more refreshed*.
